An exciting new community project in Darnall

What is it? A programme of free outdoor events and nature-based activities for families who live in the Darnall area of Sheffield, which aims to:

  • inspire you to connect with nature
  • raise awareness and understanding of the vital benefits of nature has for our livelihoods, health and wellbeing, and how we can all help nature thrive
  • explore how you can improve green space where you live
  • support you to bring your ideas to life
  • give you the skills and knowledge to care for your green space
  • help you to feel safe and secure whilst spending time in your local green space

We're looking for families to take part in an ongoing project (initially over 1 year), to help shape what the project will be and do, so it responds to your needs and has a meaningful positive impact. You won't need to take part in every activity/event but it would be great to have families take part in multiple events throughout the year. What activities and events take place and how often depends on what comes out of the idea exploration at our initial events.

Who is running it? The pilot project will be delivered through a partnership between:

  • Kids Plant Trees - a not-for-profit organisation working to help children and nature thrive together, in Sheffield and beyond
  • Evergreeny - a community focused after school club and home-ed support provider in Darnall, Sheffield
  • Sheffield Environmental Movement - a Sheffield-based charity working to reconnect Black Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugees (BAMER) communities to green spaces
  • Friends of High Hazels Park - a voluntary group working to maintain and improve High Hazels Park in Darnall, Sheffield

The story so far

We launched the project in April 2024 with a free family event in High Hazels Park that included a tree walk & identification, photography scavenger hunt, clay snail and seed bomb making, and idea exploration giving participants a say in what the project should be and do. This gave us the evidence we needed to source some funding to pilot the project, and in October we heard we were successful in our bid to the Groundwork/Bupa Green Community Fund, which will go towards running a range of activities with families and making some improvements to the park to benefit people and wildlife.

We're now seeking further funding to cover the remaining costs of the pilot and to extend the project, so we can make a meaningful difference to families in the area. If you would like to support the project by volunteering, donating or offering in kind services, please email steph@kidsplanttrees.org

Our next event

We are running another FREE event for families in the Darnall area on Sunday 24th November, 10.30am-12.00pm. With a range of nature based activities, refreshments, and the chance to have your say on the project, including what activities we offer at future events. Book your tickets here
