Community tree planting - Kids Plant Trees

Latest update - May 2026

Exciting news! Our application to The National Lottery Community Fund was successful, which means we're now able to start running regular volunteer sessions for adults, starting in June (book here) and a number of seasonal family friendly events (coming soon). We’ll also be inviting school groups to come and get involved, and we're seeking additional funding for this.

We've also been selected by The Tree Council for their Growing Together scheme, which has brought us amazing support with setting up (thank you Sarah and Katie) and some essential equipment for collecting rainwater and irrigating tree beds.

Over the past few weeks we've been building raised beds and preparing the ground for a new shelter, which will hopefully be built by the end of the month. It will give our team and volunteers shelter from the elements while they're processing seeds, potting up saplings, or just having a well earned cuppa!

Why start a community tree nursery?

At Kids Plant Trees, we've spent the last 6 years creating opportunities for children (and their grown ups) to help nature by planting trees and other activities. We've seen the positive effect spending time in nature can have on people of all ages. It brings people joy, calm, wonder, confidence and connection - with the natural world and each other.

We're working to increase tree canopy, especially in areas with low tree cover, and we'd love to do this using trees grown from seeds gathered within in the region. This will reduce the impact of transporting the trees on the environment (fewer miles travelled = fewer greenhouse gas emissions) and ensure the trees we plant have the best chances of thriving (the trees will be better adapted to our local environment, weather etc).

Most of all, we want to create a tree nursery with and for the people of South Yorkshire, especially children and young people - after all, it's them who'll benefit most from having more trees around them.

Get involved

We need you! From seed gathering to growing trees at our nursery site in Sheffield, there are plenty of ways for people of all ages to get involved. Whether you're an individual, family, school or community group, we hope you'll join us on this exciting adventure!
